In all the years that we’ve been in business, we’ve photographed so many expectant mothers who have been through a loss. We’ve had the honor of doing pregnancy shoots for these Mamas who were expecting their rainbow babies.
A rainbow baby is a child who is born after the mother experiences the miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death of another baby. It’s the hope after the storm. We personally can’t imagine how hard it must be to go through the loss of a baby, and we also know that, unfortunately, many families don’t know how to cope with the pain. But we do know that it’s important to remember one thing: There’s hope!
When Dulce reached out to me (Stephany), I asked her to share her story in the hopes that we could help other Mamas who are going through what she went through. This was her first time to share something so personal and, in her own words, “As hard as it was writing this, I felt that I needed to share it.” Read her story below.
Stephany: How did you find out that you were expecting your baby?
Dulce: My period was two days late. I ran to the bathroom for a pregnancy test, waited a few minutes for the result, and there it was: “Pregnant.” I got on my knees and started crying. I thanked God for you, my baby! I was so excited, and I wondered how you would be—if you were a boy or a girl, and if I would be a good mom.
S: When did you first know that something had gone wrong?
D: Four days later, I started having abdominal pains and started bleeding. And this is how my nightmare started. I went to the emergency room. They performed a blood test and said they would see me right away. There we were—my boyfriend, my stepdaughter, and I—all sitting in the waiting room, waiting to hear someone calling my name. Hours passed, five hours to be exact, and we decided to go home and rest. I was afraid and in doubt, and surely around midnight, the pain was back. This time I started bleeding. I rant to the bathroom, and all I could think was, I already lost you. I felt like I was drowning. I started to cry.
We went back to the emergency room. They performed another blood test, and two hours later, the doctor came back to confirm what I already knew but refused to accept. My eight-week-old baby was gone.
Fortunately, I did not have to go through medical intervention, but the sonogram indicated that my baby was forming outside the uterus and, sooner or later, this would have happened.
S: I am so sorry that this happened to you! I can’t even imagine what you went through!
D: I thought I hit rock bottom. I cried silently when I wanted to scream, and I forced myself to smile while my soul was grieving. My family was far; I wish I would have been able to receive a hug from my mother or my older sister. I questioned God so many times, and I even doubted His love for me. But at the same time, I asked Him to help me understand why I had to go through this. My heart really hurt. Sometimes it even hurt to exist.
I didn’t know then, but a few months later, I received the greatest gift from heaven: another baby! I understood then that it was not the bottom I hit but the beginning of a new path. Now I have a little angel in heaven and another one on the way that I already love with all my heart!
S: Your story is so beautiful! What would you say to other Mamas who have experienced a loss?
D: A rainbow baby is a child born after the loss of a previous baby. It is the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not deny the ferocity of a storm. When a rainbow appears, it does not mean that the storm never happened or that the family is not dealing with their pain. What it means is that something beautiful and full of light appeared in the darkness of the clouds.
If you are going through something similar now, do not lose hope! The storm will pass, and your days will be illuminated with a beautiful rainbow.

There are also endless possibilities for rainbow-colored accessories during your session. We could also leave the confines of the studio and do an outdoor maternity shoot instead. We can work together and think outside the box to design a creative maternity photoshoot just for you!
After your rainbow baby is born, we can personalize your newborn session, too. We could arrange a shot with your baby on rainbow-colored props or use rainbow-colored wraps or blankets. We might even be able to design a shot of your baby appearing to be inside of a rainbow or at the end of a rainbow. We could arrange for some colorful cloud scenery to frame your little rainbow baby, too!

After your baby is born, you’re loving life as you’re enjoying your little miracle. But you’ve also been through a lot. Why not spoil yourself with a salon appointment or a new dress?
You can do that here at our studio as part of your newborn photoshoot. While we’re taking pictures of your rainbow baby, you can have your hair and makeup done at our studio for 90 minutes with our optional pampering package. Do you like to be outdoors? We can arrange for you to have an outdoor maternity shoot for your rainbow baby at a special location in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. You could have a unique maternity session with all kinds of possibilities that might not be possible indoors! We can arrange for rainbow-themed flowers, ribbons, streamers, or just about any accessory you like for your outdoor maternity shoot.
Does baby’s Dad like to be outdoors? He can be in your outdoor maternity shoot, too! We can arrange for you and Dad to be seated at a rainbow-themed picnic or enjoying any other beautiful outdoor setting. There are so many possibilities for a creative maternity photoshoot outdoors! We’ll discuss the options with you and help you select the one that’s best for you.
What about your rainbow baby’s older siblings? Can they be included in an outdoor maternity shoot or an indoor pregnancy shoot? Yes, of course! A rainbow baby is definitely a miracle that the entire family can celebrate together!
Imagine baby’s Dad, siblings, or even Grandma and Grandpa, huddled around you as you’re dressed in a gorgeous maternity gown while you’re all surrounded by rainbow-themed props. Maybe each member of your family is dressed in a different color of the rainbow. We could even put together a series of shots of you with individual family members or groups of family members—you and baby’s Dad, you and baby’s siblings, you and baby’s Grandma and Grandpa.
Then maybe after your miraculous rainbow baby is born, the family can join you and your newborn for the family session! A great way to do this would be with our optional pampering package during which a hair and makeup artist will help you get all gussied up for your family session. After your pampering session, all of the baby's family members can meet up with you and your baby (after the newborn session) and take some gorgeous pictures together! All of you together make up the beautiful “rainbow” of your family, and we can capture these precious memories for you.

Anytime we put together a unique maternity session, a newborn session, or a family session for you, it’s important that we gather some information about you and your family first. During a design consultation—which is the first step in setting up a photo session with us—we’ll get to know you. We’ll learn about your personality, your tastes, your likes and dislikes—everything that makes you YOU. The design consultation is also a great time to tell us about any ideas or vision that you already have specifically for your photo session.
