Motherhood is such an exciting, incredible whirlwind! Now that you’re expecting, you’ve realized that there are so many details to keep track of: Going to all of your doctor appointments, attending your baby showers, preparing your nursery, planning for your hospital stay, hosting your family—the list goes on and on! Then you realize that you forgot to add another important detail to your to-do list: getting a maternity photoshoot.
So, you Googled “pregnancy shoot near me” or “maternity photoshoot near me” and found us! Now what? How is one more detail going to fit into your already hectic schedule? (All during a time when it’s hard to stay physically active?)
We’re glad you asked. In this article, we’re going to show you everything you need to know for either your creative maternity shoot or your pregnant couple photoshoot. Mamas are prepared for everything, right? Now let us help you be as prepared as possible as we document this exciting, special time in you and your family’s life!
When should a Mama schedule her maternity photoshoot?
If there is one question that we get asked over and over from parents all around the Dallas/Fort Worth area, it is definitely this one: “When is the best time to schedule my maternity session?”
Before we answer that question, please keep in mind that every photo session will be different, because every person is different. There are medical issues to consider, schedules to juggle, weather conditions to monitor, and all sorts of other factors. So, we’ll really need to meet with you to help you pick the best date for your specific maternity session. The best time and place for us to get together to review all of these details with you personally is at the design consultation. (Whenever you’re ready to book your design consultation with us, click here.)
With that being said, we believe that the best time to schedule your maternity session is at least two months before your due date. We feel that the seventh month of pregnancy is usually the best time to photograph this special season of your life simply for practical reasons. If you were to do your photo session too soon, the pictures might not have the same effect as they would if the session were to occur closer to your delivery date. And if you were to wait too long, you might not feel like participating in any photography-related activities.
As you probably already know, the last month of pregnancy is the hardest one. You will feel extra exhausted and uncomfortable, back pain will most likely start to kick in (if it hasn’t already), and you will definitely get tired much more easily than you did before.
But if you were to schedule your creative maternity shoot during your next-to-the-last month of pregnancy, you’d have plenty of energy to pose for glamorous maternity photos, funny maternity pictures, or any other types of photos that would make you look fabulous. If you and Dad were to opt to have a pregnant couple photoshoot, you two would have much more fun together than you would during your last month of pregnancy! You’d be more alert and better able to let your creative juices flow during the photoshoot. We’ll do all we can to keep you as comfortable as possible during your creative maternity shoot—no matter when you decide to have it—but you’ll have a much better time if you don’t wait until you’re too pregnant to pose for us!
Some Things to Keep in Mind When Scheduling Your Maternity Photoshoot
1. The physical demands of the maternity photoshoot.
Our maternity sessions usually last for about two hours, and you’ll more than likely be on your feet for most of that time. If we’ll be doing an outdoor session, you’ll have to do quite a bit of walking as well. Not to mention, since we’ll be photographing you and your beautiful baby bump, you’ll be spending a lot of time doing a lot of poses during your creative maternity shoot. Scheduling at least two months before your due date is a good idea because posing can be a challenge if you’re right in those last days of pregnancy.
With that being said, we’ll do everything we can to keep you as comfortable as possible during your session, and we definitely want you to have as much energy as possible! Just keep in mind that creating an epic maternity photoshoot, some funny maternity pictures, or a beautiful pregnant couple photoshoot is a lot of work.
2. The weather during the photoshoot
Another important factor that needs to be taken into consideration is the weather. If you live in Texas, you know how hard (or impossible) it is to predict exactly what the weather will do. But we all know that the summer months can be scorching hot and that a rainy season can definitely mess up any plans.
The best way to work around the weather’s crazy unpredictability is to plan in advance. That way, if your session will need to be rescheduled because of the weather, you’ll still have plenty of time to do your creative maternity shoot, to stay alert for your funny maternity pictures, or to have your fantastic pregnant couple photoshoot.
A Crazy Story
A few years back, I (Stephany) photographed a Mama who started having strong contractions on the way to the maternity session. She really wanted to document those last moments of her pregnancy, and I remember her like it was yesterday. While pausing to hold her belly and counting her contractions, she told me, “I don’t care if I’m going straight to the hospital after this session; I’m getting those pictures taken now.” We managed to finish the session after quite a few breaks, and guess what? She went straight to the hospital and had her baby. Needless to say, that was one of the sweatiest moments in my career.
Moral of the story? Don’t wait until the last minute, because your baby might want to meet you sooner than you think!
I can definitely say that in all those years of photographing maternity sessions, I’ve seen it all. I’ve had Mamas who reached out to schedule their session while they were barely a few weeks pregnant, and I also had Mamas who decided at the very last minute to document this moment in time. Whichever one you are, it would be my absolute pleasure to capture this unique and special moment in your life!

5 Tips for a pregnant couple photoshoot done right
A pregnant couple photoshoot is another way to capture this unique time in your life. Having a maternity session with baby’s Mama and Dad together is a great idea! When your child is older, you’ll be able to show him or her how much fun you two had as parents as you were anticipating his or her arrival. Here are a few ideas on how to make that happen.
1. Pick a theme that reflects your identity as a couple
Are you an adventurous couple? Do you two like to do outdoor activities together such as hiking or camping? Do you each have a goofy sense of humor? Or do you prefer a quiet night of movie-watching or binge-watching together? We can integrate some of those elements into your pregnant couple photoshoot. Depending on the type of theme you choose, we can have a completely outdoor maternity photo session or inside our studio. We can talk through more details during your design consultation, which you can book by clicking here!
2. Wear matching or complementary colors
Once we’re all in agreement on what type of theme and other details we’ll have for your pregnant couple photoshoot, you’ll want to think about the wardrobe for your session. For your maternity gown, we have a fabulous selection for you to choose from. (You can see and read more about our designer gown collection here!) After Mama has an idea of which gown she’d like to wear, it would look great if Dad could wear either the same color or a color that will complement the maternity gown!
3. Let your creative juices flow for some funny maternity pictures
You’ll only be pregnant with this baby once, so why not have some fun with this unique time in your life? Letting us take some funny maternity pictures with both Mama and Dad will be a fantastic way to show your child years from now just how much you enjoyed expecting him or her! There are nearly endless ways to do this, and we would love to discuss them with you at your design consultation! (When you’re ready to book that consultation with us, simply click here.)
4. Plan ahead
Remember: The best time to schedule a maternity photoshoot is at least two months before your due date. So, make sure to pick a date when baby’s Mama and Dad can both make it to the photoshoot. It will also be good to allow some time for us to get to know you and your family so that we can incorporate as much of your personality as possible into your session. That way, we’ll be able to give you the best creative maternity shoot that we can!
5. Let the whole family join in the fun
If your baby’s extended family—Grandma, Grandpa, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins—want to be part of your pregnant couple photoshoot, the more the merrier! Be sure to incorporate all of the above tips into your planning: a family theme, matching or complementary colors, creativity, and planning ahead. This will really help everyone pose for some beautiful photos, take some funny maternity pictures, and have an awesome time doing it!
